I am not a COHUM member. Can I still get a COHUM ID?

COHUM ID is only for COHUM members. It is very easy to register as a member. Simply click on SIGN UP on the menu bar.

I live outside of India. Can COHUM ID still help me?

Yes. We believe COHUM ID is a valuable asset for anyone anywhere. Information required in cases of medical emergencies is the same anywhere in the world. And having it immediately available will help ER doctors immensely to save your lives. We are working on establishing partnerships in some countries with a few organizations similar to COHUM. In the meanwhile, the Classic COHUM ID will probably serve you best. Please contact us and we’ll be happy to suggest potential options available to you.

Why do you need a hard copy and a physical signature?

Ideally we would love to keep everything paperless and digital. Unfortunately in order to protect our members and ourselves from any legalities we need the forms to signed by the respective members. We have some sensitive information on our forms such as organ donation status and advance care directives. Most people do not have digital signatures or certificates yet. Also it is very easy to confuse a certified digital signature with an ordinary electronic signature.

I have a Classic membership. How can I get a Premium membership?

Sign into your account. On the Members’ dashboard you will see a link to “Upgrade” for every Classic member you have on your dashboard. Simply click the link, make the necessary payment and follow the instructions. You will receive a new COHUM ID for Premium Members.

We also recommend you return your old Classic COHUM ID.

The website only lists pendants for COHUM IDs. However, I have heard that you also have bracelets. Can I get one?

Yes, bracelets are also an option. The default option is the pendant. So far we have not updated our site with bracelets for several reasons. If you are interested in bracelets instead of a pendant please contact us as soon as you have registered. The pricing for bracelets is higher, but until we update our website we will honor the existing pricing for bracelets as well.

Can I put my COHUM ID on a different chain?

Yes you certainly can, although we strongly recommend wearing it on the original chain. We recommend that you do not use any chain of significant value like real gold.

Can I get an extra COHUM medical ID? (To hang on my bike or keep in my bag, for example)?

Just click on “Order a new COHUM ID” from your Dashboard. Premium members can get one free COHUM ID per year if there are updates to their medical history, warranting a change of ID.

What is "Send a Gift"?

"Send a Gift" is simply short for "Send the Gift of COHUM to your loved one". Perhaps you believe some of your friends or relatives can benefit from COHUM. May be it is a festival season and you are wondering what gift you want to buy for your parents. Giving the Gift of COHUM will show that you really care about the person and you always want them to be safe and cared for.

For example, your parents live in a different town. So you buy a COHUM ID for them. We will create and deliver the COHUM ID to your parents. Or may be you want to gift COHUM to your niece or nephew who travels a lot.

How do I give COHUM ID as a gift?

If you are already a member of COHUM, you can find the menu item to give the Gift of COHUM on the left side menu panel of your member dashboard. Simply click the link and add the 3 requested details.

I am not a COHUM member. Can I still give COHUM ID as a gift?

Yes, absolutely. You will only need to create an account for yourself because financial transactions are involved. SIGN UP to create your account. You do not need to become a member. There is no obligation to buy any COHUM services. Once you have your account activated (see other related FAQs), you can directly use the link for Give the GIFT of COHUM.

I live abroad but I wanted to give COHUM as a gift to my parents (or friends/ relatives) in India. How can I do that?

This is not an issue at all. We accept payments via PayPal for international currencies. We are also sorting out some minor regulatory issues related to seamless currency exchange transactions. Please contact us for details.

PS: COHUM ID may be beneficial to you even if you live outside of India.

What do I do to claim a gift?

You should have received an email indicating that your loved one has sent you the gift of COHUM. The email will also provide you with instructions on claiming the gift.

Why should I return my old COHUM ID?

Good question. There three good reasons we would like you return your old COHUM ID.

  1. You have a new COHUM ID because some of your critical medical information has changed. Thus your previous COHUM ID is obsolete. Thus, you should not carry the previous COHUM ID anymore. Most users will probably throw away their obsolete COHUM IDs into garbage and cause additional burden on the environment. We want to be as green and environmentally friendly as possible. So we collect all unused and obsolete COHUM IDs and recycle them at steel foundries.
  2. Even though your old COHUM ID has outdated information it still needs to be securely handled. We believe your medical information should remain as private as possible. Having an unnecessary COHUM ID lying around increases the chances of them falling into wrong hands and potential misuse.
  3. You will receive a special gift certificate just for being environment friendly.

How do I returm my old COHUM ID?

Simply put it in a reasonably strong envelop and send it to us by postal mail. Please use the following address.
COHUM Membership
C/O Dr. Mandar Ketkar
Flat # A-4, 1st floor, Liberty Society
Opp Lane 5, North Main Rd, Koregaon Park
Pune 411 001 MH, India

What do you do with returned COHUM IDs?

We collect returned COHUM IDs and intend to send them to stainless steel foundries where they melt the material and reuse it for other purposes. In this way we believe we are helping reduce or eliminate any environmental hazards that excess steel could cause. More importantly we also believe that we are protecting your privacy to our best ability.

At the moment, however, we are only collecting old COHUM IDs. We have not found a suitable, reliable foundry that is willing to help us. Perhaps some of you folk run a stainless steel foundry or know someone who does and may be willing to help. If so, please contact us to discuss.

COHUM asks about organ donation. I need to know more about this.

COHUM supports organ donation as well as the consumer’s right to make an informed decision.  We at COHUM believe that organ donation is an excellent way to help safeguard human life even after we are no more. Organ donation is a voluntary act and no one can force anyone to donate their organs. There are many myths and misbeliefs about organ donation.

We recommend that you can educate yourself about organ donation and make the right choice for yourself.

What is an Advance Care Directive? Why do I need it?

Sometimes we are unable to make a decision due to many reasons such as:

  • accident
  • dementia or similar condition
  • unconsciousness or a coma.

If this happened, how would we want decisions to be made for us about our health care and any personal matters? More importantly, who would we want making these decisions for us? This is a very stressful time for all involved. An Advance Care Directive makes it a bit easier for family members or doctors to know our wishes.

Examples of Advanced Care Directives

  • If I am unable to recognise my family and friends and can’t communicate, I do not want any medication to prolong my life.
  • If I am dying I want to be in a comfortable environment surrounded by my family and friends.
  • If I have a terminal illness I do not wish for any life sustaining or artificial treatment.
  • If I am brain dead then do not put me on a ventilator.
